How precisely can the difference method determine the πNN coupling constant ?

چکیده
The Coulomb-like backward peak of the np scattering differential cross section is due to one-pion exchange. Extrapolation to the pion pole of precise data should allow to obtain the value of the charged πNN coupling constant. This was classically attempted by the use of a smooth physical function, the Chew function, built from the cross section. To improve accuracy of such an extrapolation one has introduced a difference method. It consists of extrapolating the difference between the Chew function based on experimental data and that built from a model where the πNN coupling is exactly known. Here we cross-check to which precision can work this novel extrapolation method by applying it to differences between models and between data and models. With good reference models and for the 162 MeV np Uppsala single energy precise data with a normalisation error of 2.3 %, the value of the charged πNN coupling constant is obtained with an accuracy close to 1.8 %.

How precisely can we determine the πNN coupling constant from the isovector GMO sum rule? Abstract The isovector GMO sum rule for zero energy forward πN scattering is critically studied to obtain the charged πNN coupling constant using the precise π − p and π − d scattering lengths deduced recently from pionic atom experiments. This direct determination leads to g

The recent determination of the charged πNN coupling constant, gπ± , by the Uppsala Neutron Research Group implies that there may be considerable charge-splitting of the pion coupling constant. We investigate the consequences of this for the charge-independence breaking (CIB) of the 1S0 scattering length, ∆aCIB. We find that ∆aCIB depends sensitively on the difference between gπ± and the neutra...

In this updated and expanded version of our delayed Comment we show that the np backward cross section, as presented by the Uppsala group[1], is seriously flawed (more than 25 sd.). The main reason is the incorrect normalization of the data. We also show that their extrapolation method, used to determine the charged πNN coupling constant, is a factor of about 10 less accurate than claimed by Er...

The sensitivity of the deuteron and of pp scattering to the πNN and ρNN coupling constants is investigated systematically. We find that the deuteron can be described about equally well with either large π and ρ or small π and ρ coupling constants. However, pp scattering clearly requires the strong ρ, but favors the weak π (particularly, in 3P0 at low energies). This apparent contradiction betwe...

Meson-baryon couplings between positive and negative parity nucleons are investigated using two point correlation functions in the soft meson and the chiral limit. We find that the πNN coupling vanishes due to chiral symmetry, while the ηNN coupling remains finite. We perform an analysis based on the algebraic method for SU(2) chiral symmetry, and find that nucleon axial charges play an essenti...
